- Q & A with Inese Stankevica
What is your legal background, your current occupation and country of work?
I’m an attorney at Law having my own practice. I am a member of the Latvian Bar Association for more than 20 years. Since 2001 I have been practising in the areas of intellectual property law, family law, corporate law and M&A, commercial law, employment and immigration, law technology, media & communication law.
How do you use European law in your current work?
Among other issues I do consult and represent clients regarding copyright issues and copyright infringements. In addition to my main profession as a consultant I am a lecturer at the University of Economics and Culture (EKA).
I am in a working group organised by the Ministry of Culture in Latvia implementing the new Copyright Directive (Directive (EU) 2019/790) in Latvia and I’m glad that the knowledge obtained in the ERA Conference will help me to represent these complicates issues better.
What was your motivation for attending this particular event?
This is an important time, as Latvia, together with other EU Member States, starts the important work on implementing the new Copyright Directive - Directive (EU) 2019/790 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 April 2019 on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market and amending Directives 96/9/EC and 2001/29/EC (DSM).
How did you benefit from the scholarship?
The Annual Copyright Conference organized by ERA just has ended, but the knowledge gained there will stay for much longer time. The same as the different questions and issues we have discussed and analysed.
The new Directive raises many answers, but also many questions and I was happy to be together with other experts and academics and to analyse these issues, receiving answers to some of them and seeing that some answers will come only with the time and practice.
