- Q & A with Maja Dobrić
Your current occupation and country of work?
For the past several years, I have been working at the competition authority in Serbia - Commission for Protection of Competition and am currently a Senior Adviser in the Restrictive Practices Division. My work revolves around enforcement of competition law and I actively work on competition infringement cases and participate in conducting dawn raids.
How you use European law in your work?
Serbia is an EU candidate country and is in the process of aligning its legislation with EU acquis. When it comes to enforcement of competition law, in accordance with the Stabilization and Association Agreement, competition infringements should be assessed on the basis of criteria arising from the application of the competition rules applicable in the Community, in particular from Articles 81, 82, 86 and 87 of the EC Treaty and interpretative instruments adopted by the Community institutions. By participating in various working groups, I contribute to drafting regulations and guidelines that aim to implement the best standards of competition enforcement developed in EU law into Serbian legislation.
How you benefitted from the scholarship and the gained knowledge?
The ERA scholarship enabled me to attend the Advanced Competition Law Training on Dawn Raids in Practice. This well-structured training taught by highly experienced practitioners from all spheres of competition enforcement provided the optimal amount of information in a structured and coherent way. As an enforcer who participated in over a dozen dawn raids by now, every new raid opens up new technical issues or new scenarios and being able to discuss these specific topics with experienced professionals from other jurisdictions was an incredible opportunity. The training enabled me to get caught up with all the relevant updates when it comes to the procedural technicalities and best practices in dawn raids, which I hope to implement in my work in the future.
