- Q & A with Mia Griic
What is your legal background, your current occupation and country of work?
I work as a teaching assistant at the Private International Law Chair, Faculty of Law, University of Split. I am also a Ph.D. Candidate in Private International Law.
How do you use European law in your current work?
European Private International law and cross-border civil litigation are parts of my everyday work. Besides teaching my students, my doctoral thesis and all research work I do is focused on European Private International Law (including European Civil Procedure Law).
What was your motivation for attending this particular event?
The Summer Course covers cross-border civil litigation within the internal market which is part of my doctoral research, as well as part of my daily work with students, so that this summer course is of great help for my future scientific and practical work, especially in the globalisation era with the increasing number of cross-border disputes and in the time of series of questions regarding Brexit and European Private International Law. My doctoral thesis is largely focused on different aspects of international jurisdiction, recognition, and enforcement, so, in my opinion, participating in this Summer Course would be a great opportunity to gain more knowledge which is going to enable me to make my doctoral thesis more valuable and more relevant for practice, as well as for the theory.
Additionally, in January 2019 Croatia enacted a new Private International Law Code which is fully based on the European Private International Law.
How did you benefit from the scholarship?
The Summer Course enabled me to improve my knowledge of cross-border civil litigation on the European level. Great lectures given by some of the best professors and practitioners in this area of law, perfect organisation and an interesting social programme succeeded in making this experience very valuable.
Last but not least, this scholarship programme enables young lawyers from the new Member States to gain knowledge in the different areas of the European law.
I highly recommend this course, since it gives great insight into cross-border civil litigation at the European level.
