Trier, 16-20 September 2024
“This course was an incredible opportunity to deepen my understanding of the ever-evolving GDPR landscape. We explored essential topics like third-country data transfers and compliance strategies, all highly relevant to the work we do at Selbstregulierung Informationswirtschaft e.V. (SRIW) to shape codes of conduct for the digital industry. The knowledge I gained will also have a direct impact on my ongoing research at CoyPu.”

- Q & A with Stavroula Chatzipanagioti
Your name, current occupation and country of work?
I am Stavroula Chatzipanagioti, a lawyer of Greek origin and currently work at Selbstregulierung Informationswirtschaft (SRIW e.V.), a Berlin-based non-profit that spearheads self and co-regulatory initiatives in the digital sector. In my dual role, I combine legal research, policy development, and project management within the AI and digital regulation landscape.
How I use European law in my work?
In my role at SRIW, I actively engage with European law, specifically the GDPR and the AI Act. I oversee legal research activities within a federally funded research project focused on AI regulation and also contribute to working groups that address legal ambiguities under the GDPR and AI regulations, and advocate for the development of codes of conduct as self and coregulatory means of harmonising industry practices with social demands and legal requirements.
How I benefited (or will benefit) from the scholarship and the knowledge gained?
The ERA scholarship gave me the opportunity to attend the Summer Course on European Data Protection Law. This expertly designed training, led by seasoned privacy professionals from diverse fields, delivered comprehensive insights in a clear and well-organized format. The practical knowledge I gained from the course has greatly deepened my expertise, and I look forward to applying it in my work to benefit both my organisation and the wider digital industry. Additionally, the chance to connect with fellow professionals and exchange ideas has expanded my understanding of the key challenges in data protection and privacy regulation.
