This presentation begins with an overview of the EU’s efforts to modernize its animal welfare legislation. It then examines the ongoing reform process in greater detail, highlighting the role of citizen initiatives, scientific advancements, and ethical considerations in shaping new proposals. Particular attention is given to the link between animal welfare, food quality, and public health within the One Health and emerging One Welfare frameworks, as well as to the challenges of ensuring fair trade, effective enforcement, and alignment between EU and international standards.
